Some photos were released from the set of the new Tomb Raider movie and it got me thinking, “what does this movie need to stay true to the games?” I came up a with a list of three things I feel this movie needs to do to keep the deep storyline that the most recent games had:
1: Keep the tough demeanor of Lara Croft.
During my play through of the first Tomb Raider, I was astounded to watch Lara get the crap kicked out of her. The game wastes no time in showing the toughness of the main character. She’s burned, had objects go through her body, arrows piercing her, and even animals ripping her apart. What makes her such a fun character to dive into was her resilience. She was never too slow to get up, or too lazy to stay down; she always got back up and brushed her self off. She is a strong female lead and I feel that needs to be in the forefront of the storytelling in the movie. Keeping true to Lara Croft’s ability to handle pain and not being afraid to show brutal actions happening to her is important.
Tomb Raider was one of the very few games I finished because the storyline was intriguing. Most of the games I’ve played have been for the gameplay itself, but Tomb Raider was different. Even going back to the first portion of this article, her resilience was one of the many reasons I kept playing. I found the story engaging and intriguing, fun and easy to follow. Staying true to the brutal story and the survival of Lara on the Island is what will help this movie succeed.
Another great point that the Tomb Raider game’s portray is the presence of violence during the gameplay. She’s not afraid to kill anything she needs to for survival. The deaths are pretty brutal in the game as well with her falling from trees and such, hitting nearly every branch on the way down. I’m hoping for some sort of nod back to the Lara Croft games with the bow and arrow as well, that was my favorite weapon during my play throughs and also the pistol with the silencer on it. The main thing I want to see is Hollywood not codling to the “damsel in distress” that many female leads are written into, I’d like for her to stand alone and show young girls that you can be strong on your own.
The movie is still in its infancy and has a tentative release date of March 2018.
What do you guys want to see from the Tomb Raider movie?
