EA has announced that critically acclaimed developer BioWare is currently working on a new IP. They didn’t go into too much detail about it, but simply just announced it would be released before the end of the Fiscal Year 2018 which ends on March 31st 2018.  Andrew Wilson, the CEO of EA, stated:

“At the end of the fiscal year, our BioWare studio will be delivering an all-new IP, a clean-sheet design with new concepts, new gameplay mechanics, and new stories set in a unique new universe. This game has the potential to fundamentally disrupt the way people think about an action title, bringing friends together to play in an exhilarating new way. We’re very excited about the future of this new franchise and its ability to attract a large, global audience.”

He also went into some detail and hinted at what the game will entail:

“What we’re seeing more and more is genre-melding, which is great components of a number of different genres really kind of coming together into single games. And so when you think about this game, you should be thinking about the great RPG character development and storyline progression that BioWare is known for, but in a world of greater action and greater adventure, which is growing to be one of the larger categories in games.”

So what does this all mean for gamers? We know it’s going to be something new in a Universe that’s full of new characters. Based on what BioWare has put out in the last couple decades, I’m expecting something with a huge open world and deep storyline. Since we don’t know what the game will be, we can only speculate as to what it will be.

A New Star Wars IP?

On our recent Podcast we discussed this and I brought up the topic of something Star Wars related. The last halfway decent Lucas-Arts game was Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, and even then it was only decent. You played as a Jedi secretly being trained as Darth Vader’s new apprentice; a pretty cool concept. The reviews were fairly positive for the game itself, but I thought it was too short and lacked story depth. With EA owning the Star Wars license at least for a few more years, I’m hoping we get some sort of open world Star Wars games like we had with KOTOR.

Nothing is really known about the game yet, but in a continued statement Andrew Wilson stated they started the game in 2012:

“In 2012, we began crafting a new universe full of new characters, stories, and gameplay. Our ambition is simple: Draw upon 20-plus years of development knowledge and lessons to create something fun and new for you to enjoy with your friends. There’s nothing quite as exciting as building a new IP from scratch, and it will be even more thrilling for us to share more with you in the future.”

What are your thoughts on this new IP?
