Disney destroyed the Box Office in 2016 and has a slate of movies confirmed for 2017 and beyond. After just 16 days in theaters Rogue One flew past Captain America: Civil War in the rankings. Seeing as how money isn’t a problem for the movie juggernaut, one would think Disney wouldn’t care about when their movies were released right? Not so fast.
Currently Han Solo and Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 are scheduled for a May 2018 release about three weeks from each other. Essentially Disney will be competing against itself. Seeing as how The Force Awakens and Rogue One were Box Office hits while being released in December, you would think they would release the movies at the same time.
It’s been about 4 years since Disney bought LucasFilm for $2 billion from George Lucas, they promised us annual releases as well as some anthology films from our favorite characters. Han Solo was one of those movies.
The main issue at hand is that Avatar 2 is slated for a December 2018 release as well. Avatar still holds the record of $2.7 billion at the Box Office. Regardless if you enjoyed the movie or not, it’s respectable to want to stay away from that monster. Fans of the movie have been waiting nearly a decade for a sequel and are looking forward to watching it around Christmas time.
Fortunately for Disney if they decide to delay the movie, some of the cast from Avatar 2 have doubts about if the A2 will make it’s December 2018 release date. In an interview with Screenrant.com Sigourney Weaver offered her opinion on the current release date:
“We haven’t started it, so I don’t know how realistic that date is, but I think it’s going to be very exciting. I’ve read three of the four [sequel’s scripts,] and they’re even more extraordinary than the first one.”
The movie is now 23 months away and they haven’t started shooting, mind you the Screenrant article listed above was posted on 12/8/16 and shooting hasn’t officially begun yet.
While nothing has been officially confirmed as of yet, MakingStarWars.net stated:
Interestingly, over the holiday, our sources in the theater industry have received a release date of December 13th, 2018 for Star Wars: Han Solo. We are not saying the release date has changed but it could signify that a release date shift for Star Wars: Han Solo is in the works. The paperwork states the release date is subject to change for Han Solo.
They did however, make it very clear that the release date has not be changed as of yet:
Star Wars: Han Solo’s official release date is May 25th, 2018. The rumored release date change is December 13th, 2018. Consider the release date shift a fun rumor for now. These sources have given us solid information that has panned out many times. At the same time, things are subject to change at the drop of a dime and sometimes the paperwork is just plain wrong.
Could the much awaited Star Wars: Han Solo movie be pushed farther down into 2018?
Or will Disney compete against itself in May of 2018?
