2016 has been a tough year for deaths in Hollywood, but the Video Game industry seemingly had a good year. But which games were the best?
(Note that I only own an Xbox One right now)
3: Forza Horizon 3
I was never much for racing games growing up, I was more of the Halo and Call of Duty player while I was in high school. Last year, Forza Horizon 2 went on sale and I decided to take a chance. I instantly fell in love. The open world was so fun to explore and the way the game presented the world was something that I had never seen before. Up until then, my favorite racing game was Need For Speed: Underground (Which tells you how many I had played).
With all that being said, FH3 can be summed up into one word; stunning. The graphics and the way the game felt was pure joy. Microsoft nailed the world design and even had better controller support for the vibration while drifting. When this game came out I was already playing multiple games and this was used as my “I need a break” game.
It was so easy to play and almost too much fun at the same time. The races felt real, they felt like you were getting somewhere and made you feel like the driver. Turn 10 studios was the developer and Microsoft published this as the first party and really showed off what the Xbox One could do. With Project Scorpio on the horizon, I’m very interested in seeing where the next installment will go.
2: Dark Souls 3
My addiction with the Souls series started in April when I had a knee surgery. I had the choice of Quantum Break or DS3. Obviously you know what choice I made, which turned out to be the right one.
A game’s difficulty had never been a draw to me. I had played games like Ninja Gaiden and tried the first Dark Souls previously and just decided that the games weren’t for me. But then a friend convinced me to give DS3 a shot; so I did.
I took the plunge into hell and I’m not going to lie, I had a tough time. My first few hours were rough and I didn’t level up because quite simply, I didn’t know how to. So I joined a Dark Souls Facebook Group which became my biggest help as a first time player.
What made this game so fun to play was the feeling you had while playing it. The feeling of defeating that boss that has killed you multiple times, of killing those enemies that you just couldn’t get past, or even the way the levels were designed. I got lost in the lore and honestly couldn’t put the game down. Dark Souls 3 wasn’t a First Person Shooter and it was my most played game last year; something that almost never happens.
What kept me interested for so long was the replay-ability. The different ways you could play this game; strength, dexterity, intelligence, faith, vitality or a mixture of all of those attributes. I had a lot of fun with Dark Souls 3, and I can’t wait to play the second DLC in 2017.
1: Titanfall 2
For those who know me, this shouldn’t be a surprise; I’ve been raving about this game since the trailer was released last year. The first game was incredible but the player base dropped off rather quickly mainly because of the lack of content and no Single Player Campaign. Having this game on the PS4, XBO, and PC helped a lot with the sales, but EA being the great company they are, released it at the most inopportune time.
With all that being said, this game is incredible to say the least. The way Respawn was able to build upon the foundation that the first game had, and made pushed it farther. The movement is easier, the guns feel smooth, and the gameplay is sheer perfection.
Not only did Respawn nail it with the MP, but the Single Player Campaign has an incredible story with characters that you want to care about. The developer took the same tools that made the first MP so good and infused that with storytelling that made Modern Warfare very good.
This game couldn’t get any better from the way I look at it. I was willing to wait many years for this game to be released if it meant it was this good. The added MP modes (Bounty Hunt, Amped Hardpoint) helped shake things up again, and with all the DLC being free, Respawn is really pushing to keep their player base for many months after release.
Do you agree with this Top 3 list?
